Mission:
Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park assists the National Park Service it its mission to preserve and protect Great Smoky Mountains National Park by raising funds and public awareness, and providing volunteers for needed projects.

Friends of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park gained its incorporating charter from the State of North Carolina on June 30, 1995. It is registered with the solicitation and contribution boards in the states of Tennessee and North Carolina. It is a 501 (c) (3) registered with the Internal Revenue Service.
Organization:
Governing the Friends are guidelines established by incorporating charter, the Bylaws of Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and a Memorandum of Agreement with the National Park Service.
Origins:
Friends began with the interest of the surrounding communities in the needs of the Park. A group gathered at Park Headquarters near Gatlinburg, TN, in September, 1993, and formally organized in November in the same year. The current staff includes seven full-time employees. Volunteers assist in the office and during special events.
